Cloud communications refers to the use of Internet-based voice and data communications services through Voice over IP (VoIP). The service also includes capabilities like hosted PBX (News - Alert), unified communications and enhanced call capabilities. Often these services are referred to as Communications as a Service (CaaS).
As the cloud communications industry evolves, service providers and technology vendors are aggressively pursuing opportunities to grab the market share. Associated with this growth are several challenges which demand immediate attention from stakeholders, according to industry experts.
The Cloud Communications Alliance (CCA), an industry association dedicated to the advancement of cloud communications technologies, is setting the stage to address some of these challenges at an upcoming meeting in San Diego.
In one of its official releases, CCA said James T. Nikolai, an officer and shareholder at the Minneapolis-based intellectual property firm Nikolai & Mersereau, P.A., will present on “The Attack of the Patent Trolls” at the CCA gathering.
The presentation will discuss the challenges that the growing threat of patent trolls pose to technology companies, resellers and end users. Nikolai will address how the popularity of cloud solutions attract an increasing number of trolls looking to capitalize on a fast-growing market.
Organizations should protect themselves from the patent troll. By understanding what motivates trolls and the possible risks, organizations can make informed decisions on how to respond, according to Nikolai.
In his presentation, Nikolai will also discuss pending legislation to combat frivolous patent infringement lawsuits.
“Resellers and distributors are attractive targets for patent trolls but are often unprepared for the expense and difficulty of mounting a legal defense,” said Nikolai.
“Unfortunately, an attack by patent trolls is a very real possibility for our members. We appreciate that Jim is willing to share his expertise and help to educate them in the event that they have to deal with this kind of scenario,” said Joseph Marion, president, CCA, in a statement.
The CCA event will take place on October 14th and 15th at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.
